Whitty, Connie

Connie (Wortman) Whitty passed away to eternal rest January 27 in the company of her family.

whitty222Connie was a resident of Canton since her marriage to Donald Whitty 62 years ago. She was born in Milton in 1926. After working as a legal secretary in Boston, she began her family. While raising her five children with her husband, she worked at the Massachusetts Hospital School, Canton High School, and the Galvin Middle School. Connie loved her time with her school families. No matter where she went, she never tired of hearing her name called from across the mall or street … Hi Mrs. Whitty. She retired from her last job as a medical billing secretary when she was 80 years old.

Connie is survived by her husband, Donald E. Whitty, and her five children, Mark Whitty, Colleen Whitty DiSanto, Susan Whitty Kennedy, Paul Whitty, and Maryanne Whitty and their spouses. Connie enjoyed her time with her 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alan K. Brown, 60, of Easton, passed away unexpectedly January 25 at home.

brown, alanBorn in Staten Island, NY, he was raised in Canton and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School. He went on to graduate from Northeastern University and received his master’s in counseling from Cambridge College. He formerly worked for the Department of Social Services, the Brockton Trial and Probate courts, and most recently worked as a clinician at Habit OPCO in Brockton.

He was an avid sports fan who loved target shooting, hockey, and especially Bobby Orr. He was also an animal lover who loved his cats, Woody and Kitty.

Beloved son of Yoko Oi and her husband, Henry Oi Sr. of Canton. Brother of Henry Oi Jr. of Canton, Allen Oi of Acton, Loretta Oi-Capone of Westfield, Marjorie Oi-Dixon of CT, and the late John Oi.

Kirby G. Harnum, 57, of Canton, passed away suddenly on January 27, 2014.

harnum2Born in Merced, California, Kirby was raised in Burlington. He graduated from Burlington High School and the University of Maryland. He worked for the family business, Harnum Industries, in Wilmington and Haverhill.

Kirby was an avid golfer and a member of the Wampatuck Country Club in Canton and the Tequesta Country Club in Jupiter, FL. He was a former member of the Cambridge Mason Lodge.

Beloved husband of Mary C. (Sullivan). Loving son of Pearl Harnum of NH and the late Gordon Harnum. Stepfather of Matthew Greenstein and his wife, Julia, of Norwalk, CT, Joanie Greenstein, Paul Shepter Jr. and Luke Shepter, all of Canton. Brother of Doug Harnum and his wife, Marge, of Lowell. Also survived by his grandchildren, Hannah and Connor Greenstein, of CT; his nieces, Ashlee and Amanda Harnum, of NH; and his dear friend Nicky “Cat Man” Catizone of Revere.

Helen A. Podgurski (Satkiewicz) died January 27, 2014, after a brief illness.

Born in Norwood, she graduated from Norwood High School. Helen was thoughtful, caring and generous. She had a wry sense of humor and was a proud Red Sox fan. Daughter of the late Louis and Anna Satkiewicz, she was the devoted wife of Donald A. Podgurski of Canton, the loving mother of Denise Anne Podgurski of Canton, and the sister of the late Robert Satkiewicz.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 1, in St. John the Evangelist Church, 700 Washington Street. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

John T. Brooks of Taunton, 74, formerly of Canton, died Wednesday, January 29, 2014, after a long illness.

John was a proud lieutenant firefighter for the town of Canton for over 33 years until he retired in 1999.

He was a member of the Canton Town Club, the Ponkapoag Civic Association, and the Knights of Columbus Council #2095. He was involved with starting the Canton Over 40 Softball League, and was an avid skier.

He was the devoted husband of Virginia E. (Fandel). Loving father of Susan C. Williams of Canton, Linda E. Rooney and her husband, Robert, of Taunton, John T. Brooks Jr. of Stoughton, Kevin J. Brooks of CO, and Gary W. Brooks and his wife, Sandra, of Norton. Brother of Paul D. Brooks of AK, Jerome M. Brooks of FL, and Commander Frederick M. Brooks USN Ret. of VA. Proud grandfather of Jake, Joe, T.J., and Danny Williams, Brianna and Baleigh Rooney, and Allison and Gary Brooks Jr.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, February 3, in St. John the Evangelist Church. Anastasia “Ann” Manoles, 79, of Canton, died Monday morning, January 28, 2014, at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton after a lengthy illness.

manolesBorn in Boston to the late Nicholas and Demetra (Trupos) Loupos, she was raised and educated in Brookline, graduating with Brookline High School’s Class of 1952. A longtime resident of the Hyde Park section of Boston, she has resided in Canton for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Manoles took great joy in being with her family and dear friends and spending time at her seasonal residence in Naples, Florida. An avid golfer, Mrs. Manoles loved music and singing and had participated in the choir at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston. She was a member of the Hellenic Nursing Home’s Women’s Benevolent Association and had been active in the ladies societies within the church.

Mrs. Manoles is survived by her husband of 53 years, George L. Manoles; her daughters, Dianne Manoles of Canton and Demetra Manoles Roker and her husband, Ronald, of Guntersville, Alabama; and her grandson, Luke.

She was predeceased by her brother, George Loupos.

Funeral services in celebration of Ann’s life were held in Saint Gregory the Theologian Greek Orthodox Church in Mansfield. Interment followed at the Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.

Sloan, Lucille B.

Lucille B. (Alsop) Sloan, 85, of Canton, died Tuesday morning, February 4, 2014, at the Hellenic Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Norwood, the daughter of the late William and Louise (Sevigny) Alsop, and has been a lifelong Canton resident.

A beautician, Mrs. Sloan began her career at Mary Brady’s Salon and then went on to open her own, “Lucille’s Beauty Salon,” which she operated for over 15 years.

Mrs. Sloan enjoyed traveling and cruising, crocheting, and was a very good cook.

She is survived by her sons, Paul Sloan and his wife, Linda, of Canton, and David Sloan of Canton; her sisters, Norma Hebert of Merritt Island, Florida, and Dorothy Kairis and her brother, William Alsop, of Rutland, Vermont.

She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Her family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Hellenic Nursing Home for the great care they gave Mrs. Sloan over these past years and would like those who wish to make donations in her memory to the Hellenic Nursing Home, 601 Sherman St., Canton, MA 02021.

Jean M. Marathas (Aberts), 57, passed away February 7 after a brief illness.

Marathas,-JeanBorn in Norwood, she was raised in Canton and graduated from Canton High School. She has lived in Brockton for the last 10 years. She had a 20-year career in the pet industry, which fostered her love of animals, which she had since childhood. She especially loved her two dogs, Buster and Samantha. Most recently, she worked at the corporate headquarters for Casual Male.

She was the loving mother of James L. Marathas of Brockton. Devoted daughter of John Aberts of Stoughton and the late Doris Aberts. Beloved sister of Judith Corrigan of Stoughton and Sandra Zaniboni of Canton.

Merton T. Mayhew Jr., 71, of Canton, died Saturday, February 8, 2014, in the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania.

mayhew-obitBorn in Canton on August 13, 1942, to the late Merton T. Mayhew Sr. and Mary (Spierdowis), Merton was a night manager and bartender for 40 years at the Canton Town Club. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton and lettered in sports at Canton High School. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. Merton enjoyed woodworking.

Beloved father of Christy Anna (Kennett) Skopal and her husband, Thomas Jr., with whom he resided, and their children, Liam and Marc. Sister of Mary Robbins of ME. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Grace P. Sullivan (Pitts), 84, of Canton, passed away peacefully on February 9 at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater surrounded by her loving family.

sullivanblkBorn in Boston, she was raised in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School in 1947. She and her siblings were avid Bruins fans and were season ticket holders for over 30 years. When Grace was a child she enjoyed spending time on the tugboats in Boston Harbor with her father. Grace and her husband, Ted, loved going out in Boston and dancing.

In her early years she worked for John Hancock as a secretary. Grace was a devoted housewife and mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing board games and was the family scrabble champion. She has lived in Canton for over 30 years where she was a dedicated parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and the Canton Catholic Women’s Club.

Beloved wife of the late Theodore V. Mother of Patrice Fillebrown and her husband, Al, of Abington, Cheryl Pooler and her husband, James, of Bridgewater, Shawn Camuso Sullivan and his wife, Lorraine, of Stoughton, Brendan Sullivan and his wife, Christine, of Randolph, Brian Sullivan and his wife, Marianne, of Stoughton, Colin Sullivan and his wife, Francesca, of Norton, and the late Priscilla and Barry Sullivan. Ronald Dwight Dodge, 69, formerly of Canton, passed away after a valiant, eight-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease on February 4 at the Lutheran Home in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

dodge, ronald2Born in Norwood, Ron attended Cardinal Cushing School (St. Coletta’s) in Hanover. While there he was an alter server, served Cardinal Cushing, and accompanied him to Lourdes. He worked in the grounds department at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton for 34 years until retiring in 2001. Ron was voted Employee of the Year in 1998 and was a proud member of the bowling league. He was a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton and St. Pius X Parish in Wauwatosa. As a lifelong fan of the Red Sox he traveled to several spring trainings and in the offseason enjoyed the Bruins and Patriots. He loved his grandpa LaValley, family vacations in Maine, archery, camping trips with his parents, and he would travel anywhere.

Son of the late Ellison and Florence Dodge. Brother of Patricia (Frank) Bruce of WI, Gregory (Jeannie) Dodge of Billerica, and Albert Dodge (Claire Wade) of Sydney, Australia. Loving uncle of Gregory, Jennifer, Deborah, Frank, Ellison, and Elizabeth. Great uncle to Mackenzie, Emily, Molly, Ellie, Madeline, Evan, and Katherine.

Anthony “Duke” Cibotti, 80, of Canton, formerly of Hyde Park, passed away February 12 at Quincy Hospital.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Hyde Park and graduated from Boston Latin School and attended Berkley School of Music. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was an accomplished trumpet player and played in the Marine Corps band during the Tournament of Roses Parade. He also played in a local band that played in many venues down on Cape Cod and in the Boston area. He was a self-employed contractor for many years and has lived in Canton for over 30 years.

Beloved father of Anthony P. Cibotti of Boston, Lisa L. Fernandes of Raynham, Rick Cibotti of NH, Michael Cibotti of FL, and the late Nancy Olson. Brother of Patrick Cibotti of Boston, David Cibotti of Braintree, and Victoria Panciocco of Stoughton. Also survived by several grandchildren.

Barbara S. Lewis, 95, of Mansfield, formerly of Canton, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

LewisBarbara was a retired caretaker who worked at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton. Devoted wife of the late Robert E. Lewis. Loving mother of Richard A. Lewis and his wife, Linda, of South Hadley, Jane Lundell and her husband, Carl, of Mansfield, and Nancy Kelly and her husband, Thomas, of Quincy. Loving sister of June Hardy of Stoughton and of the late Richard Sawyer. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Ann (Matheson) MacLean, 79, of Canton, died Wednesday, February 12, at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

maclean3Born in Cambridge, she was raised in Somerville and was a 1952 graduate of Somerville High School. She attended Northeastern University for one year. Beverly worked as a clerk at Met Life branches in Cambridge, Arlington, Bethlehem, PA, and Waterbury, CT. She also worked at Boston Envelope and ISI in Braintree and was a nanny for several families. She also lived in Bethlehem, PA, and Southington, CT. She loved knitting and socializing.

Beverly is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Gerald; her beloved daughter Heather Green and her husband, Paul, of Canton; her son Donald MacLean of Brockton; and her sister Sally Anderson of Beverly. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren and her one great-grandchild.

Anne S. Parker (Schreiber), of Canton, passed away February 12 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Detroit, she was raised in Grosse Pointe, MI. She graduated from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, attended Wellesley College, and received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard Extension School. She worked as an administrator for Harvard Medical School for 15 years before retiring in 1994. She has lived in Canton for over 55 years and was an avid skier, skater, and gardener. She also enjoyed beekeeping, weaving, and making rugs.

Beloved wife of the late Peter S. Parker. Mother of Daniel Pugh IV of South Dartmouth, Guy Pugh of Jamaica Plain, Rees Pugh of Los Angeles, Caitlin Selle of Concord, Hester Parker of Pacific Grove, CA, and Adam Parker of Los Angeles. Stepmother of Nicholas Parker of Idaho. Sister of Mayo Schreiber of Farmington, CT, Dodie Willcox of Randolph, NH, and the late Robert Schreiber. Also survived by 14 grandchildren.

Robert F. “Birdie” Burchard, 53, of Canton, formerly of Brockton, died unexpectedly on February 13 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Burchard, RobertBeloved husband of Mary Ellen (Cormier). Devoted father of Abigail W. and Sadie D., both of Canton. Loving son of Mary L. Burchard (Cashin) of Weston and the late Joseph Burchard. Brother of the late William Burchard. Brother-in-law of Sue Burchard of Weston. Uncle of Molly and Joe Burchard of Weston.

A 1979 graduate of Brockton High School and a fixture on the ball fields of Brockton as a youth, Bob’s passion for sports continued throughout his life. He attended Bowdoin College, Class of 1983, and majored in economics. It was at Bowdoin where he joined Beta Theta Pi and developed lifelong friendships.

In 1993 Bob began working alongside his cherished brother Billy at Fast Forwarding Inc., a nationwide freight forwarding and transportation company. Following Billy’s untimely death, Bob chaired the Billy Burchard Foundation, focusing on a cure for pancreatic cancer. Bob has been president of Fast Forwarding for the past eight years.

He married the love of his life, Mary Ellen, in December 1996 and together they raised two daughters whom he adored. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends.

Bob was a kind, compassionate, and generous guy who always put the interests of others before his own. He loved to laugh, cook, play and watch all types of sports, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Bob will be truly missed by all, yet he will continue to live in our hearts through the countless stories and unbelievable adventures he experienced.

Ordway, Harold F.

Harold F. Ordway, Jr., 90, of Canton, passed away on February 18 at his home in Canton.

Ordway, HaroldBorn in Revere, Harold was raised in Saugus and graduated from Saugus High School. He went on to earn his BS from Benjamin Franklin University in 1951 and his MBA from Dartmouth College Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management in 1974. Seaman Ordway served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He continued serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Retired Naval Reserve for 35 years before retiring in 1984. Mr. Ordway worked as the director of credit for the Houghton Mifflin Company in Boston for 27 years before retiring in 1989.

He was an active member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, the National Society of the Sons of the Revolution in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Boston Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, The Order of the Founder and Patriots of America, the Warren Cousins, Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, Piscataqua Pioneers, The Baronial Order of Magna Charta, The Flagon and Trencher Society, and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne. A few interesting facts that Harold loved to share about his heritage: He was the seventh great-grandson of Susanna North Martin, who was hanged as a witch in the Salem Witch Trial on July 19, 1692. He is a descendant of 14 signers of the Magna Charta and has 11 lines back to the Mayflower.

Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Brown). Loving father of Dorothy O. Tilley and her husband, Paul, of Canton, Jane Ordway Carman of Sunnyvale, CA, and Melinda J. Ordway and her husband, Bill Skerry, of Dedham. Cherished grandfather of Peter and Patrick Tilley, Nathan Carman, and Jillian and Thomas Skerry.

Alfred G. Theirrien, Sr., 77, of Falmouth, formerly of Canton, passed away at home on Thursday, February 20. He leaves his beloved wife of 54 years, Jean (Nugent) Theirrien.

After serving during the Korean War for the U.S. Navy, Al worked for 27 years at Plymouth Rubber Co. in Canton. He worked at Reebok in Stoughton for 27 years as well. Al was a great family man and loved spending time with his family. He loved his garden, flowers, the Patriots, and loved to decorate his home for all holidays. Al was an avid backyard bird watcher.

Besides his wife, Al is survived by his children: Cheryl Chace of Canton, Alfred “Sonny” Theirrien, Jr. and his wife, Allison, of Burlington, Debi Marathas and her husband, Nick, of Canton, and John Theirrien and his wife, Sue, of Sandwich; and his eight grandchildren: Kristin, Erica, Demi, Jake, Meaghan, Jamie, Abi, and Amelia. He is also survived by his sister Rose and brother Tommy.

Catherine C. “Kitty” Theodore (Carteris), 82, of Canton, passed away February 26 at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton.

theodore, catherine 3Born in Reading, PA, Kitty was raised in Lynn where she attended Lynn Classical High School. Kitty and her husband, “Teddy,” moved to Canton in 1957. After staying home to raise her two sons, Kitty went to work for Analog Devices in Westwood as a purchasing supervisor for many years before retiring in 1990.

Beloved wife of William “Teddy” Theodore. Loving mother of James and his wife, Mary, of Walpole, and Thomas and his wife, Barbara, of Canton. Devoted sister of Charles Carteris, Christopher Carteris of Lynn, Peter Carteris of FL, Lee Laganas of Swampscott, Audrey Talarico of NH and FL, Ann Carteris of Lynn, and the late Ernest Carteris. Cherished grandmother of Nicole, Kristen, Ali, Mimi and Will Theodore. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 3, in St. Gregory’s Church in Mansfield. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery.
