Cravens, William W.

William W. Cravens, 56, of Canton, passed away April 28 at home surrounded by his loving family.

cravenspaperBorn in Framingham, he was raised in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1976 where he was a star athlete on the football and baseball teams. He went on to attend Cushing Academy and Elon University in North Carolina. He previously worked for Emerson & Cuming, Napoli Wrecking, N.E. Insulation, and most recently worked for the Canton Recreation Department for the last 25 years.

Bill loved the town of Canton and was an avid fan of all the local youth sports teams and a member of the Canton Town Club and the American Legion Post #24. Bill was honored on April 13 of this year when the field at the Dean S. Luce School was named in his honor.

Beloved husband of Rosemarie (McCarthy). Devoted son of the late Mary Frances (Woods) and William C. Cravens. Brother of Edward Cravens and his wife, Joyce, of East Bridgewater, Carol Duggan and her husband, William, of Canton, and Kimberly Piro and her husband, Joseph, of Mansfield. Son-in-law of Patricia C. McCarthy of Canton and the late John T. “Mac” McCarthy. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Arthur K. Tordoff, 70, a lifelong resident of Canton, died peacefully April 28, 2014, in Tower Hill Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation after a long illness.

Raised in Canton, Arthur proudly served in the Army National Guard as a staff sergeant working as a welder/blacksmith. He worked as a plumber for JPA and for EM Duggan in Canton for many years until retiring in 2004. Arthur was a proud supporter of the NRA and enjoyed striper fishing and riding his Harley Davidson.

Son of the late Arthur (Ted) and Margaret Tordoff. Devoted husband of Karen Tordoff (O’Neill) of Canton. Loving father of Pamela H. Groom of Pembroke, Joshua D. Tordoff and his wife, Michelle, of Hanson, and Josiah K. Tordoff of Canton. Brother of the late Jerilyn Tordoff-Flagg. Proud grandfather of Mark, Zachary, and Tyler Groom, all of Pembroke.

D’Agostino, Bernardino

Bernardino “Benny” D’Agostino, 86, of Windsor Locks, CT, the loving husband of 56 years to the late Leona “Lee” (Meyer) D’Agostino, entered into Eternal Rest on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Benny was born on August 17, 1927, the son of the late Nicholas and Mary D’Agostino. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during World War II and retired from Olivetti Underwood Typewriter after several years as a design engineer. Benny was an avid woodworker and built magnificent lighthouses.

Benny is survived by his two children, Robert D’Agostino, MD, and his wife, Pamela, of Canton, and Linda Hinckley and her husband, Paul, of East Hartford, CT, and seven grandchildren. Benny is also survived by two brothers, Nicholas D’Agostino and his wife, Wanda, of Las Vegas, and Steven D’Agostino of San Diego, and several nieces and nephews. Benny was predeceased by a brother, Louis D’Agostino.

Robert J. Doyle, 72, of Canton, passed away suddenly at home May 1.

doyleBorn in Tacoma, Washington, he was raised in Rhode Island and graduated from East Providence High School. He went on to attend the University of Rhode Island and earned his law degree from Boston University.

He was a partner with Steinberg Doyle in Newton for many years. During his legal career he was a mentor to many lawyers, co-founder of the National Lawyers Guild in Boston, and was an attorney for the American Indian movement at Wounded Knee in 1975.

He had lived in Canton since 1988 and enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially sailing, skiing and kayaking.

Beloved husband of Diane R. Givens. Father of Jason D. Givens-Doyle of Brooklyn, NY. Brother of Kathleen Thornton of Westport, CT. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Edward B. Hanscom, 86, of Canton, passed away May 1 at the Charlwell House in Norwood.

hanscomBorn and raised in Westbrook, Maine, he was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked as a meat packer for Colonial Provisions for 40 years and retired in 1987.

Beloved husband of the late Geraldine I. (Sousa). Father of Marian G. Baudanza of Norwood. Uncle of Ronald Dorman, Steven, Warren and Brian Hanscom, and Carol Smith.

Vincent P. Healey of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Canton, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, after a brief illness. He was 65 years old.

Vinnie was a 31-year employee of the Boston Globe, working as a distribution foreman, and he later worked for the Arizona Republic newspaper. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Wampatuck Country Club in Canton and Palm Valley Country Club in Phoenix. Vinnie was a 1966 graduate of Canton High and a 1972 graduate of Fort Kent State (University of Maine at Fort Kent).

Son of the late Paul and Priscilla Healey. Devoted husband of Carole E. Healey (Davis) of Phoenix. Loving father of Dennis Healey of Stoughton, Rachel Shaver of Boseman, MT, Kelly Wright of Plympton, and Paul Bumpus of Phoenix. Loving brother of Christine Healey of Concord, Patti Healey of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Johanna Healey of Concord, Jill Healey of Tigard, OR, Paula Healey of Clinton, John Healey of Canton, and Rebecca Healey of Canton. Proud grandfather of Millie, Annabelle, Patrick, and Maxwell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

William O. “Bill” Riordan, 81, a longtime resident of Canton, veteran and volunteer firefighter, died Wednesday, May 7, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Riordan2Bill was born in Somerville and moved to Canton in the 1940s with his family. He joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Massachusetts National Guard. He served with the Engineer Platoon, 25th Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War.

In 1954 after completing his service, he worked construction with the Local 4 for 19 and a half years. Bill then worked at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton for 19 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #24 in Canton for 52 years, past commander in 1971-72, and lifetime member of the 2nd Infantry Division Association.

Bill was well known and loved by many in the town of Canton. He was known for his love of bartending at the American Legion, hats, pens and pins, and John Wayne movies.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Claire F. (Andrews). Father of William O. Riordan II and his wife, Theoni, of Middleboro, and Joan K. Riordan of NC. Grandfather of Tina, John, and Christopher Riordan. Brother of Timothy Riordan of FL, Marilyn Henley of Wareham, and Joanne Sullivan of Easton.

A funeral mass was held Friday, May 9, in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. James F. Carlson, Sr., 75, of Canton, passed away May 12 at the High Gate Manor in Dedham.

carlsonBorn and raised in Boston, he attended Boston schools and was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard.  He worked for M.D. Stetson Co. in Randolph as a salesman for 35 years before retiring. He also previously worked as a self-employed photographer and as a photographer for the Herald Traveler. He lived in Canton from 1974 to 2008 and was a coach for Canton Youth Soccer for many years and was a member of the Canton Men’s Soccer Team.

Beloved husband of the late Margaret M. (Coyle). Father of Deborah Carlson-Evans and her husband, Paul, of North Attleboro, James F. Jr. and his wife, Irene, of North Easton, Pamela Carlson of West Roxbury, and Scott Carlson of Chelmsford. Grandfather of Jonathan and Jameson Evans, and Samantha, Amanda and James Carlson. Brother of John V. Carlson of NH, Eleanor Hanlon of Wayland, and the late Elizabeth Lebedew.

Walter C. Marz, 89, of Canton, passed away May 12 at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton.

Born and raised in Bristol, Rhode Island, he was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He worked for many years as the assistant registrar for the Center for Adult Education before retiring and most recently worked for the Canton Housing Authority and for the Canton Senior Center.

Marilyn A. Mutch (Rich), 72, of Canton, passed away at home May 16.

Born in Somerset, she was raised in Brookline and graduated from Brookline High School. She has lived in Canton for the last 53 years and enjoyed spending her summers at the family home in Bass River. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Nancy C. Davis, 80, of Canton, died Saturday May 17, 2014, in Brigham and Women’s Hospital after a brief illness.

Nancy was a member of the chorus at the Canton Senior Center and a member of the Viking Club of Braintree. She enjoyed sewing and spending time in Bayville, Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Joseph P. Thornton Sr., 85, a longtime resident of Canton, passed away Monday, May 19, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Lieutenant Thornton served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the 82nd Airborn, Triple Nickel 555, earning the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Parachute Medal, Air Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Thornton worked for Reynolds Aluminum as the regional sales manager before retiring in 1992.

Joe was an avid golfer and a member of the Wampatuck Country Club for 53 years, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling and was a dedicated family man. Beloved husband of 61 years to Jeanne V. (Pickering). Loving father of Joseph P. Jr. and his wife, Denise, John A. and his wife, Jane, all of Canton, and James C. and his wife, Rosemarie, of Plymouth. Brother of Marie Harte of Quincy. Grandfather of James Thornton Jr., Michael Thornton, Jillian Bilodeau, Thomas Thornton, Jeffrey Thornton, Colleen Thornton, Daniel Thornton, Richard Thornton, Joseph Thornton III, Elaine Thornton, Christine Thornton, Lisa Thornton and Stephen Thornton. Claire Marie Danahy (Finn), 85, a longtime Canton resident, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, May 12.

Danahy, ClaireFor over 50 years, she was the loving wife and constant partner of Paul A. Danahy, who passed away three years ago. Claire was predeceased by her older brother John T. Finn in 1989. Claire is survived by her two sons and their wives: Paul (Mike) Danahy and his wife, Diane Angwin, of Chelmsford, and Jack and Sandy Danahy of Bow, NH. She leaves behind five loving grandchildren: Isabelle, André, Claire, Patrick, and Meaghan.

Born in South Boston and raised in Dorchester, Claire moved with her family to Canton in 1941 and went on to graduate from Canton High School. She loved to tell stories of her time as a switchboard operator and supervisor for the New England Telephone Company in the Canton office, where she made many lifelong friendships. Claire was a talented artist and enjoyed all manner of knitting and sewing throughout her life.

Warren H. Holmes, 88, of Ft. Myers, Florida, formerly of Canton, died peacefully on May 17, 2014.

Warren was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific with both his brother and father. He worked as an automotive electrical repair mechanic in Canton for many years and later owned Cedar View filling station in Green Harbor. He was a member of the Blue Hill Masonic Lodge AF & AM in Canton.

Devoted husband of the late Mary E. Holmes (Gelpke). Loving father of Gary R. Holmes of Canton, Janice C.  DaSilva and her husband, Jay, of Holbrook, and Randall H. Holmes of Enfield, CT. Twin brother of Wesley Holmes of CT and the late Virginia Alsworth. Proud grandfather of Daniel Holmes, Katherine Orlowski, Michael DaSilva, Brian DaSilva, Jill DaSilva, Julia Holmes, and Tyler Holmes. Proud great-grandfather of Cooper and Penelope DaSilva and Christopher Orlowski.

Henrietta “Kenny” Randolph-Aronoff, 71, of Brockton, passed away unexpectedly May 20 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton.

She went on to attend hairdressing school and worked as a hairdresser for Headmaster’s in Canton and several other local hair salons. She also worked for Staples, Morse Shoe, and Mallory Headsets in West Bridgewater as a receptionist. She enjoyed painting, listening to music, reading, and going to the beach.

Beloved wife of Allen Aronoff. Mother of Clarence “Randy” Randolph, Jr. and Kelly Mallory and her husband, Dana, all of Brockton. Grandmother of Brooke and Mya Mallory and Hailey Holmes, all of Brockton. Daughter of Esther (Tabella) Gomes of Stoughton and the late Edward Gomes. Dr. H. Irving Rapoport, 87, of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of Canton, entered into rest on May 21, 2014.

Beloved husband of Ricky (Spitzer) Rapoport and the late Eunice Rapoport. Devoted father of Joyce and Bill Habalow, Marcia and Scott Weber, and Alan Rapoport and David McCarthy. Loving brother of Ann Furman and the late Murray Rapoport. Cherished grandfather of Rebecca, Amy, Jay and Julie. He will be missed by his extended family, including Ricky’s children, Craig and Thea Spitzer, Jeffrey and Joanie Spitzer, and grandson Jonathan.

Before retiring to Florida, Irving practiced optometry in Canton for 50 years. Rosemarie Manning (O’Sullivan), 65, of Middleboro, formerly of Canton, passed away May 26 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

manning2Born and raised in Boston, she graduated from Dorchester High School. Before moving to Middleboro in 1986 she previously lived in South Boston for many years. She worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance for over 40 years before retiring and worked part time for Lincoln Financial after retirement. She enjoyed spending time and taking part in the activities at the Middleboro/Carver Council on Aging. Rosemarie was an avid reader and most especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Beloved wife of Robert D. Sister of John O’Sullivan and his wife, Eileen, of Dorchester, Steven O’Sullivan of Dorchester, and the late Maureen F. Manning. Sister-in-law of Thomas Manning of Randolph and Barbara and Dennis Tallent of Braintree. First Sergeant Joseph A. Anastasio, 45, formerly of Canton, passed away suddenly May 25 in Germany where he was stationed while serving in the United States Army.

anastasio2Born and raised in Canton, he graduated from Blue Hills Regional High School and attended Troy University. He was a mechanic by trade and enjoyed working on cars.

Joseph enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating from high school and had a decorated 27-year military career. For the majority of his service he was stationed in Germany, Japan and Bosnia and also had tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. For his service to the country he was awarded two Bronze Stars, two Meritorious Service Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, the Combat Action Badge, the Airborne Badge, the Iraq Service Medal, and the Afghanistan Service Medal.

Beloved husband of Tina M. Anastasio of Florida. Father of Joseph and Angelica Grace Anastasio of Florida. Step-father of John and Kaitlynn Orren. Loving son of Joseph A. and Dianne M. Anastasio of Canton. Brother of Cynthia Anderson and her husband, Robert, of Hanover, Clark Anastasio and his wife, Kelly, of Easton, and Scott Anastasio of Canton. Uncle of Nichole Anderson of Hanover and Cheyanne and Scott Anastasio of Barre.
